The Palestinian Authority has continued to detain a Palestinian man from the Hebron-area town of Dura in the southern occupied West Bank despite four court orders calling for his release, according to a statement released on Wednesday from legal NGO al-Haq, in which the group condemned the PA for the detention. Shadi Nammourah has been “arbitrarily” detained by the PA’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) in its Jericho detention center, according to al-Haq, which cited release orders by courts in Dura and Jericho issued on 30 May, 13 June, 20 June, and 3 August. GIS responded to each release order by continuing to detain Nammourah, allegedly based on new charges, al-Haq said. The Palestinian human rights organisation said they have sent […]

Street cleaners in Dubai are wearing new ‘cooling collars’ to prevent heat stroke as they work in rising Gulf temperatures that can hit 45 degrees Celsius, Dubai said on Wednesday. The glitzy Middle East emirate issued 4,000 cleaners with orange fabric collars containing a chilled gel, similar to the cold compresses used for injuries, to fasten around their necks and stay cool as they work outdoors. “This type of cooling material (can)… protect the body from high temperature so that the worker is not subject to heat exhaustion,” Abdulmajeed Saifaie, director of the waste department, said in a statement. ‘Cooling collars’ to protect Dubai cleaners from summer heat https://t.co/bkxL16CfGr pic.twitter.com/3f3qw8apeo — Dubai Informer (@Dubaiinformer) August 30, 2017 Projections show the Gulf […]

Almost two million Muslims now making the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia marked the first day of the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday on Friday by symbolically stoning the devil – a ritual known as the “Great Jamara” – near the holy city of Mecca. In Egypt, meanwhile, millions of Muslims attended Eid prayers in public squares across the country amid a carnival-like atmosphere accompanied by heavy security measures.
